Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dream". For as long as I can remember my dream to attend a prestigious graduate school and continue my education has been an obtainable goal. As my undergraduate studies progress, I’ve gotten more involved with this dream of going to graduate school. When I made the decision to pursue a career path in psychology, I developed more understanding and curiosity of where I want to go and what program I want to pursue.
Psychology programs hold similar pre-requisites and requirements within the application process that allow me to understand the main criteria I wish to obtain during my search for graduate schools. Due to the high demand and scarcity of applicant positions of acceptance, I will narrow down my graduate school search to fulfill my requirements and expectations of a school and program.
Clinical/Counseling Psychology Programs
Within the process of becoming an LPC which is a licensed professional counselor I will need to pursue a master’s degree in counseling. This process of holding a master’s degree often takes 2-3 years while a doctorate within psychology typically takes 5-6 years. The process of becoming an LPC is as follows: earn a bachelor's degree in psychology, pursue a master’s degree in counseling, complete a practicum and/or internship hours, complete a licensure exam, obtain counseling licensure and/or certification, choose a counseling career path, advance practice through continuing education.
Location
During the selection process of looking for a graduate school fit for me I wanted to take into account the location population, distance from family, and environment as a whole. I moved to the Midwest region when I was 8 from Georgia and found myself falling involve with the Midwestern culture. As someone who's stayed and experienced a long portion of time in the Eau Claire area, I'm looking towards relocating to a different area in Wisconsin, within the Midwest, and even venturing to the Southern states in the United States. My hope is to relocate to a location where I can have immersed myself with the culture that I can see myself entering the workforce in post graduate school.
Graduate School Interests
I have considered several schools I hope to apply to as I am interested in the program as well as the school's geographic location.
