Wrapping Up The Semester

May 6, 2022

The End Of Junior Year

As I wrap up my third year at The University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, I have focused on taking into consideration my plans for summer. As I begin to utilize my skills to conduct research on the factors that facilitate self-recovery within young adults of NSSI (non-suicidal self-injury). I also begin my search for opportunities to build my resume and CV. Several internships and volunteer opportunities I have looked into include interning with the Bolton Refuge House, Inc. which offers internships to gain knowledge of the non-profit domestic violence/sexual assault services field. Within this internship I learn about the different aspects of direct services to clients who have been affected by domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and/or stalking. As a potential intern I have the opportunity to work closely with victim advocates on staff and work directly with clients to assess needs, make referrals, and provide support.

Summer Research

Working with Dr. Muehlenkamp has given me the opportunity to explore research through the exploratory lens of focusing on a comprehensive literature review that emphasizes the intellectual synthesis of the topic on self-recovery within young adults of NSSI (non-suicidal self-injury). Through the ongoing ebbs and flows the semester has taken me with research there's many factors which set me back with my research. Ending the semester strong with the fresh mindset and maintaining goals to hold myself accountable throughout the summer is important to prepare myself for senior year. Alongside my plans to work on research, I will also have a focus on studying and preparing for the GRE as well as prepare myself for graduate school applications.

Main Takeaway

I've gained insight from my experience as I finish my first year as a McNair scholar. Through the exploration of research topics, attendance of the McNair symposium, attendance of CERCA, and so much more. I have gained perspectives of my peers and my cohort as a whole. I've grown closer with other scholars and gained insight on their research topics and interests. It's through my experience in McNair that has allowed me to regain motivation and desire within my future plans. I have my peers and my cohort that has shown me perseverance and understanding of hardships that allow me to direct that into my research and apply such experiences to my applications for graduate school.
